3 Ways to Know if Your Table is Actually Solid Wood

Buying a table that looks like solid wood doesn’t always mean you’re getting the real deal. At YEG Woodcraft, we know how easy it is to get fooled by veneer-covered particleboard or mass-produced pieces that only pretend to be handcrafted. Here's how to tell the difference—and why it matters.

1. Check the Edges & Underside

Solid wood will show consistent grain patterns that wrap around edges and underneath. Veneers? They’ll peel, chip, or look suspiciously perfect on top and raw underneath. Look for variation—that's the charm of real wood.

2. Feel the Weight

A solid wood table is heavy. It has a sturdy, grounded feel that comes from real, dense hardwoods like Oak, Maple, or Walnut. If it feels light or hollow when you move it, chances are it’s not built to last.

3. Inspect the Grain, Not the Finish

Mass-produced furniture often uses printed wood patterns to mimic grain. But you can’t fake natural texture. Run your fingers across the surface—solid wood has irregularities, knots, and depth that finishes can’t hide.

Why It Matters:
Your table isn’t just a piece of furniture—it’s where your family gathers, where memories are made. Don’t settle for something disposable. Choose something handcrafted, locally made, and designed to last.
